Black Studies (Minor)
Why minor in Black Studies?
As a Black Studies minor, you will gain an appreciation of how the Black experience has influenced society psychologically, culturally, spiritually, politically, historically, and artistically. You will explore linkages among race, culture, and identity, gaining more perspective to critically evaluate past and current racial affairs.
As a Black Studies minor at AU, you will examine the evolution of Black culture throughout history at the local, national, and global levels. You will gain knowledge of the research and scholarship on the Black experience and learn to think critically about how the Black experience has influenced society and been influenced by society. You will analyze literature, film, and popular culture, and discuss and evaluate current depictions of African Americans in mass media.
In the Black Studies program at AU, you will draw upon a wide range of disciplines, including:

This interdisciplinary minor prepares students for careers or graduate work in the social sciences and humanities. The Black Studies minor complements a wide variety of majors – including History, Political Science and Public Policy, Psychology, and Sociology – by fostering a greater understanding of the diverse experiences of people of African descent.
Your knowledge of the global impact of Black culture will help you establish a solid foundation for both graduate study and careers in the fields of business, education, government, politics, and psychology.
