Simple Gifts

I began making a series of still life related paintings in 2016 of overhead views of bowls and containers with stripes that harmonized with the colors found inside of the bowl. In 2019 I began to use domestic subjects. These prosaic objects gave me a control over my work that I was seeking since I often used images from the internet or toys which are other artists conceptions. In 2020 I found my self at home wanting to paint so I started photographing items of my subsistence, specially my food. This became the subject of my art and literally the substance of my existence. Being stuck at home gave me the opportunity to deeply concentrate on my painting. My first painting, May Your Plate Always Be Bountiful, is a poetic statement in paint to the value of our sustenance in a time when peoples' very survival was threatened. I was lucky to have basic food but was not able to obtain certain foods pictured in the painting after photographing and consuming them.
Simple Gifts was created after the hoarding of grocery stores began. It took me 2 weeks to be able to buy a bag of lentil beans since all the nonperishable food was being hoarded at that time. Simple Gifts shows a half-eaten bowl of lentils. The spoon is enlarged a bit to invite the viewer to partake in the image. The gifts, in this case the beans, are not just offered like in May Your Plate Always Be Bountiful but are presented in the act of being eaten, showing the viewer that these gifts are much needed and appreciated.
Both of these works are painted from photographs of plates of my homemade dishes. The background stripes were chosen to highlight the importance of the dishes themselves and the color is painstakingly harmonized with the colors in the still life to exalt these once mundane dishes into honored offerings.
Comencé a hacer una serie de pinturas relacionadas con la naturaleza muerta en 2016 de vistas aéreas de cuencos y recipientes con rayas que armonizaban con los colores que se encuentran dentro del cuenco. En 2019 comencé a utilizar temas domésticos. Estos objetos prosaicos me dieron un control sobre mi trabajo que estaba buscando ya que solía usar imágenes de Internet o juguetes que son concepciones de otros artistas. En 2020 me encontré en casa con ganas de pintar, así que comencé a fotografiar elementos de mi subsistencia, especialmente mi comida. Esto se convirtió en el tema de mi arte y, literalmente, en la sustancia de mi existencia. Estar atrapado en casa me dio la oportunidad de concentrarme profundamente en mi pintura. Mi primera pintura, Que tu plato sea siempre generoso, es una declaración poética en pintura sobre el valor de nuestro sustento en una época en la que la supervivencia de las personas estaba amenazada. Tuve la suerte de tener alimentos básicos, pero no pude obtener ciertos alimentos representados en la pintura después de fotografiarlos y consumirlos.
Simple Gifts se creó después de que comenzara el acaparamiento de las tiendas de comestibles. Me tomó 2 semanas poder comprar una bolsa de frijoles de lentejas ya que toda la comida no perecedera estaba siendo acumulada en ese momento. Regalos simples muestra un cuenco de lentejas a medio comer. La cuchara se agranda un poco para invitar al espectador a participar en la imagen. Los obsequios, en este caso los frijoles, no solo se ofrecen como en Que tu plato siempre sea generoso, sino que se presentan en el acto de ser comidos, mostrando al espectador que estos obsequios son muy necesarios y apreciados.
Ambos trabajos están pintados a partir de fotografías de platos de mis platos caseros. Las franjas de fondo se eligieron para resaltar la importancia de los platos en sí y el color se armoniza minuciosamente con los colores de la naturaleza muerta para exaltar estos platos una vez mundanos en ofrendas de honor.
