Ana Zanic

My art practice is an exploration of the formal visual elements, as well as my personal feelings, through an intuitive, spontaneous process. Through the abstract form, I investigate questions of memories, origin, and past.

My abstract paintings, often reminiscent of imaginary landscapes, are built with layers of watercolor washes with an emphasis on the mark-making. There is a quiet tension between the watercolor's fluidity, softness, and calm, vs. the dynamic, rhythm and energy of the pencil and dip pen drawing.

The spontaneous and gestural activity of mark-making in my work is closely tied to calligraphy, language, and symbolic communication.

In my series of paintings titled “Migration” that I started last year, I focused on my experience of moving from one culture to another. After living in the United States for sixteen years, I became a US citizen.

Moving from one's native home (in my case, Croatia) to another one entails a continuous search for self-identity, as well as a sense of longing for what's understood and familiar. It also means coming to terms with a constant feeling of change, facing the unfamiliar and relearning daily.

During the coronavirus pandemic my studio practice became complicated, having both of my small children at home all the time. I started working more on sketchbooks and had less time for the larger scale paintings. The mark-making became the center of my attention, adding simple marks as a means of marking the passing of time.

The tension of the familiar/unfamiliar, of being in control vs. lacking control is in the core of my art practice. The mark-making is a journal, one that speaks a universal language.
