Study Abroad Opportunities

Costa Rica (University of Costa Rica, San Jose)

6–12 credits

  • A variety of interactive Spanish immersion classes (all levels available, beginner/intermediate/advanced)
  • Volunteering and service learning opportunities available for credit (intermediate Spanish required)
  • Duration and cost: Four weeks for 6 credits (late May departure to late June return), cost TBD
  • Duration and cost: Eight weeks for 12 credits (late May departure to late July return), cost TBD
  • Included: Accommodations and two meals/day with a host family, laundry, pick-up from the airport, arrival orientation, tour of the city and a couple excursions, wireless internet on campus, and more
  • Not included: Airfare (group flight might be an option), books, optional excursions, passport fees, pre-approval fee for courses to transfer to AU, etc.
  • General Education credit available
  • No previous foreign language experience necessary (but recommended)

Quebec City, Canada

4–8 credits, depending on courses and length of study

  • Interactive French immersion classes in the morning (all levels available, beginner/intermediate/advanced)
  • In the afternoon, explore the city, or enroll in optional, for-credit workshops in drama (theater), photography, music or French
  • Volunteering and service learning opportunities available for credit (intermediate French required)
  • Duration and cost: Three weeks (you may stay longer and take more classes for an extra fee), cost TBD (depending on afternoon workshop)
  • Included: Tuition, accommodations and two meals/day with a host family, laundry, orientation and tour, wireless internet on campus, and more
  • Other housing options are available, for an additional fee
  • Not included: Airfare (group flight might be an option); books, optional excursions, passport fees, pre-approval fee for courses to transfer to AU, etc.
  • Tentative departure: mid-June

Spain

Several options in Spain are available to students, including university-level Spanish courses. In addition, varying with each summer, a few courses in Spain are offered in English (i.e., Spain Today, International Business, International Communications, Spain and Art, European Union and Political Structures, and the History of Spain). Length of stay varies from 4 weeks (6 credits; cost TBD) to 2 months (12 credits, cost TBD).

Other study abroad options

A variety of programs are available in countries such as Italy, France, and Germany. AU offers individualized and customized study abroad summer options (including volunteer, service-learning, teaching, and experiential-learning opportunities) with credits in several majors, minors, general education, and elective credit. Please inquire for more details.

AU also offers an affiliate course (register at AU for this course in Spring; travel in May) in marine and island ecology of the Bahamas through the Associated Colleges of the Chicago Area (ACCA) and the Shedd Aquarium.
