Action

In the Action phase of the Core Curriculum, you’ll bring your learning to life by drawing on the knowledge, skills, and experiences you’ve developed across your Core and major courses. You’ll apply what you’ve learned to real-world challenges through experiential and applied learning opportunities.

What You’ll Do

You’ll put your knowledge and skills into action through:

  • Second Year Seminar (SYS)
  • Experiential Learning

Second Year Seminar: Inquiry in Action

You’ll take the next step in your Core Curriculum experience in Second Year Seminar: Inquiry in Action, an interdisciplinary course focused on community-engaged research and hands-on inquiry. You’ll explore a topic in depth, develop your ideas through reflective dialogue, and apply your knowledge in meaningful ways.

In SYS, you will:

  • Engage in hands-on, community-connected research.
  • Connect your coursework to real-world issues and questions.
  • Develop and refine ideas through inquiry and reflection.
  • Build skills in communication across different audiences and formats.
  • Collaborate with peers, faculty, and community partners.

Your SYS culminates in a Community Roundtable, where you’ll share your research and ideas with a broader audience of peers, faculty, and community members. This experience challenges you to communicate effectively, think across disciplines, and contribute to conversations that extend beyond the classroom.

Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is learning by doing — applying your knowledge in hands-on ways, such as internships, research projects, service learning, performances, and global experiences. Explore experiential learning at AU.
