Climates of Change: An Introduction to Environmental History
At its core, history is a discipline about humanity’s past. In recent decades, however, particularly as humans have considered the fundamental challenges that such issues as climate change, nuclear war, and species extinction pose, historians have increasingly turned their focus to the changing relationship between humans and their natural environment. What have they learned in doing so? How have we shaped our environment? How has it shaped us? How, and when, did humans come to see “the environment” as something to be protected, rather than as something to be feared and conquered? How do we understand the past differently when we consider humans as one species among many others? What new perspectives can we gain on the present—and on the future—by exploring history with such questions in mind? This course will explore these questions and, in doing so, help us to gain new insights while also working together to sharpen our communication, research, reading, and critical thinking skills.
