Aurora University is expanding how it prepares future educators through technology-driven initiatives in the School of Education.

Teacher candidates are gaining hands-on experience with immersive simulations and innovative learning environments designed to mirror today’s classrooms. These tools help students build confidence, refine instructional skills, and better prepare for student teaching and their future careers.

One of the most impactful additions is the Student Teacher Simulation Lab, developed through AU’s partnership with VictoryXR. Using virtual reality headsets, students teach in a virtual classroom where they interact with AI-powered avatars representing diverse learners. They practice questioning strategies, classroom management, and ways to connect with the learners while receiving immediate feedback on their instruction throughout the simulation. They can also practice teaching bilingually, which helps them prepare for diverse school settings.

“The simulation lab allows our students to practice, receive feedback, and build confidence before they ever step into a real classroom,” said Aubrey Brammar Southall, associate professor and coordinator of secondary education. “We’re preparing teachers we would trust to teach our own children.”

The tool supports AU’s growing teacher education programs by providing additional opportunities for individualized practice and feedback.

Beyond the simulation lab, the School of Education continues to expand experiential learning through additional technology, collaboration with faculty across disciplines, and partnerships with local school districts. These efforts strengthen preparation and help ensure graduates are confident, adaptable, and ready to lead in today’s classrooms.
