Caring for yourself in the job search

Searching for a job can feel like riding a rollercoaster — full of hopeful highs, frustrating lows, and unexpected twists.

At a recent AU Grad Networking Group session, alumni and students gathered virtually to talk openly about managing the stress, uncertainty, and emotions that often come with the process with featured speaker Anna Finnegan ’18, ’19.

A licensed clinical social worker and certified grief counseling specialist at the Josselyn Center, Finnegan shared her expertise on protecting your mental health during a job search. Drawing from her work in mindfulness-based therapy and life transitions, she emphasized that self-care isn’t just “nice to have,” it’s essential for staying resilient and confident.

Here are six takeaways from the conversation that can help you care for yourself throughout the job search:

  1. Build structure into your search. Treat your job hunt like a workday by setting specific “on” hours for applications, networking, and interview prep, and allow yourself “off” hours to recharge.
  2. Know the difference between a break and procrastination. Check in with your intentions: Are you recharging to return to your search with energy, or avoiding because it’s uncomfortable?
  3. Celebrate process, not just results. You can’t control every outcome, but you can celebrate actions such as submitting applications, practicing interview answers, and making new connections.
  4. Protect your confidence. Reframe rejection as redirection and engage in activities outside of your search that help you feel competent, joyful, and grounded.
  5. Set boundaries with well-meaning but stressful questions. When family or friends ask about your job search in a way that feels pressuring, have a short, prepared response ready and then politely shift the conversation to another topic.
  6. Lean on your network. Whether it’s Career Services, friends, alumni, or even casual acquaintances, talking about your search can lead to support and unexpected opportunities. Remember, no one has to navigate this journey alone.
