Job searching can be tough – but hearing directly from those on the other side of the hiring process can make a big difference.

During a recent AU Grad Networking Group event, two alumni with experience in recruiting and hiring shared insider tips on how to stand out in today’s competitive job market: Lauren Lawson ’12, a seasoned talent acquisition professional currently at Playlist, and Darryl Harris ’22, a former recruiter now working as an account executive at Amazon.

Here are six takeaways from the conversation:

  1. It’s a numbers game. Be strategic.

Lawson shared that over the course of her career, she’s heard “it can take up to 200 applications to get one job offer.”

While that number may feel overwhelming, it underscores the importance of quality and strategy over simply hitting “apply.” Make every application count by tailoring your materials and approaching the process thoughtfully.

  2. Your resume is not an application.

One of the biggest mistakes candidates make? Treating their resume like a basic job application. Your resume should tell a story that is aligned with the job and company you’re pursuing. Consider the following tips to craft a stronger resume:

    • Use keywords directly from the job description.
    • Include metrics, accomplishments, and results.
    • Highlight awards or recognitions if you're light on experience.
    • Focus on impact, not just duties or design. Remember: It’s not about fancy graphics. It’s about showing what you’ve achieved and how you will bring value to the organization.

  3. Align yourself with the employer.

Hiring managers want to make sure you’re not only qualified for the role, but also aligned with the company’s mission and values. When writing your resume or preparing for interviews, be sure to:

    • Use the language the company uses.
    • Talk about your passion for the company’s mission.
    • Share examples of how your past work and/or values align with theirs.

  4. Master the interview: Flip the STAR method.

When it comes to interviews, both panelists had tips on storytelling, including a fresh take on the familiar STAR method for answering questions (Situation, Task, Action, Result).

Lead with the impact by starting with the result. Then, explain the situation and your actions. This keeps your answers punchy and helps the interviewer immediately understand why your story matters.

  5. Rejection isn’t personal.

Job hunting can be emotionally exhausting, especially when you don’t hear back. Hiring decisions are influenced by many factors that have nothing to do with you as a person or your potential. Instead of focusing on what isn’t happening or isn’t working, focus on what you can control:

    • Customize your resume and cover letter.
    • Follow up when appropriate.
    • Keep learning and adjusting your strategy.

  6. LinkedIn is your digital first impression.

Both Lawson and Harris stressed the power of LinkedIn, suggesting three key tips to help set yourself up for a successful job search:

    • Use relevant keywords in your profile.
    • Follow companies you're interested in.
    • Reach out to recruiters and hiring managers with thoughtful, personalized messages.

Networking doesn't have to feel awkward – it’s about making genuine connections.

The job search process is rarely easy, but armed with the right tools and perspective, you can navigate it with more confidence. Whether you're applying to your first job or making a career pivot, the advice from our alumni boils down to this:

  • Focus on the impact you've made.
  • Tell your story with clarity and alignment.
  • Use your network and don’t be afraid to reach out.
  • And remember — it only takes one “yes” to change everything.
