Police Supervisor/Sergeant (sworn officer)

Position Purpose: The Police Supervisor/Sergeant (sworn), under the direct supervision of the Director of Campus Public Safety, or designee, supports learning by providing supervision and direction to Campus Public Safety staff to ensure the overall safety and security of Aurora University.

Interacts effectively with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students and other customers of our service, learns and uses operating practices of the department and Aurora University.

- Supports learning through performance of essential job functions and performing other duties and functions as necessary or as assigned.
Essential Job Functions:
- Handles all emergency situations arising on campus including but not limited to personal injuries, fires, threats to persons and all other emergency incidents.
- Understands, adheres to, and enforces all Campus Public Safety rules and regulations, policies and procedures and written memorandum. Enforces all applicable state laws and works cooperatively with federal, state, county and local law enforcement agencies. Reports all security and safety violations and hazards to appropriate campus authority.
- Serves as a positive role model for students and provides general campus supervision.
- Provides visible patrols of campus to prevent criminal activity on campus.
- Supervises subordinate staff to ensure the objectives of the work unit are met. Schedules officers for work and approves leave requests. Addresses personnel issues and recommends disciplinary action as appropriate. Documents employee performance and conducts performance appraisals.
- Delegates authority to subordinates to ensure the shift maintains a high level of performance.
- Reviews reports and work of subordinate staff. Promptly addresses and corrects all observed mistakes by subordinates.
- Assists in developing operational and emergency response plans.
- Supervises investigations and conducts investigations as needed.
- Establishes and maintains direct contact with faculty, staff, students and neighboring community.
- Compiles reports to meet federal reporting requirements (CLERY ACT).
- Provides data and updates to Campus Public Safety website.
Essential Job Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice or any professional field required, or a combination of at least 60 hours of college credit and significant experience in law enforcement/public safety.
- Significant experience in police work, preferably in a campus setting.
- Minimum of five years supervisory experience in a law enforcement setting.
- Applicant must be a certified law enforcement officer through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
- Possess a valid Illinois Class D driver’s license.
- Possess a valid Firearms Owner’s Identification Card (FOID Card).
- Knowledge of campus regulations, working knowledge of appropriate federal, state and local laws including the Campus Security Act.
- Ability to enforce rules and regulations firmly and fairly and possess excellent communication skills.
- Ability to analyze complex police problems/situations and to adopt effective and reasonable course of action to ensure the safety of the campus.
- Available on a 24-hour basis in the event of an emergency or crisis. Scheduling: This position involves regular and irregular shift work and shift rotations necessary to provide campus safety services 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, and 52 weeks/year (weekend and holidays included). Work shifts may be extended in the event of emergency, disaster, staffing shortage, work load, or work-in-progress.
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age.
- Successfully pass a thorough background investigation, a polygraph examination, a psychological evaluation, and a medical examination which will include a pre-employment drug screening.
- Ability to perform all the duties of a police officer.
- Ability to affect arrests and subdue fleeing suspects.
- Ability to lift and carry equipment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. without assistance.
- Ability to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time.
- Ability to climb flights of stairs/ladders.
- Endure exposure to extreme weather.
- Operate equipment with necessary dexterity.
- Ability to provide assistance to citizens and co-workers in distress.
- Ability to read, comprehend and speak English.
- Ability to use a computer.
- Ability to achieve and maintain firearm proficiency.
