Learning Outcomes — Special Education

  • Knowledge of how special education laws impact students and families by studying the history of laws and by attending special education meetings in local schools.
  • Understanding of how and when different types of abilities develop and how they can uniquely combine in an individual.
  • Appreciation of differences in learning and how these differences are one aspect of the richness that diversity brings to a classroom.
  • Ability to employ instructional strategies, planning, and assessment that will enable all children to learn and reach their potential, using adaptations and technology when needed.
  • Ability to create a learning environment that fosters autonomy, competence, and belonging.
  • Knowledge of the range of language development from pre-school through the high school years by analyzing children's language, learning to distinguish between issues of English language learning and difficulties acquiring language more broadly.
  • Ability and inclination to advocate for special students as members of the larger diverse community, modeling for those students what it is to be a lifelong learner.
  • Ability and inclination to collaborate with colleagues, having gained the skill of flexibility through repeated collaborative experiences in the pre-service program at Aurora.
