HUM 2880 (4 cr): The Arts and Human Experience

What better way is there to learn about the visual and performing arts than to experience them for yourself in New York City? The instructors have both lived and/or worked professionally in New York City and will take you on an immersive tour of the city’s Theatre and Visual Arts. The first week of this course (May 6-10, 2019) will be spent on the Aurora campus where students will learn the historical and social significance of the artists and work they will find themselves exposed to in New York City. Travel dates to NYC will be May 13-20, 2019. On May 13, students leave for a week-long stay in NYC where students will experience Broadway and Off-Broadway plays, museums, art galleries and a music or opera experience. Students will be housed in the New York Conservatory of Dramatic Arts apartment-style dormitory housing and will also have the opportunity to dine and mingle with a variety of New York theatre and visual artists throughout the trip. The trip culminates with a 3-day (May 22-24, 2019) return to campus where students will have a chance to reflect on their experience by learning and practicing critical response methods and techniques.

This course has been approved for General Education distribution credit for “Creative/Artistic Expression” (students must file a petition). Trip costs for this travel course are $1,900, including flight, lodging (including breakfast), transportation, tickets to 2 Broadway plays, 1 Off-Broadway play, 1 additional theatre performance, 1 concert or opera experience and entrance to multiple museums and galleries. This does not include the cost of AU tuition. Please contact Stacy Parker Joyce (sjoyce@aurora.edu) or James Kao (jkao@aurora.edu) for more information and to learn more about what is included in the trip costs.
