FRN/HUM 3880 (4 cr): History, Culture, and the Arts in Context: A Travel Study Course and Immersion Experience to the South of France

Join us for this memorable course to the south of France! Using the picturesque city of Aix-en-Provence as our home base, you will experience cultural activities and regional excursions (from the busy streets of Marseille to the quaint ambiance of the marine village of Cassis) that will help you discover the French culture, a unique blend of ancient and modern history, current-day France, as well as the French language and the arts. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to immerse yourself in another country and culture, all with support and expertise of AU faculty in the comforts of an AU student group. During the trip, you will stay (with another student) with a French family who provide traditional breakfasts and French dinners. You will attend morning classes at a French institute (within walking distance to your host family) where you will meet students from all over the world. Your AU faculty will lead afternoon seminars and we will all participate in the institute’s cultural activities. You’ll be able to explore Aix-en-Provence’s tiny streets and beautiful gardens, its architecture, as well as experience French culinary delights, an excellent arts scene, and lively cafés and markets. Flight, arrival transportation, all breakfasts and dinners, lodging, and all excursions will be included in the price of this trip. Mandatory pre-departure meetings will take place on several dates in the Spring semester 2020 (dates TBD). Mandatory course meeting dates on AU’s campus are (tentatively) May 4-7, 2020. Travel dates from Chicago O’Hare to France are approximately May 9-20, 2020. This course has been approved for General Education distribution credit in both categories of “Creative and Artistic Expression” (HUM 3880) and “Cultures and Civilizations” (FRN 3880), as well as the French minor and History major. If you would like to earn General Education distribution credit for either category, please contact your adviser and file a petition. Trip costs for this travel course are approximately $3000, including flight, lodging, all breakfasts and dinners, in-country transportation, all class activities and excursions. This does not include the cost of AU tuition.
