Experience Cambodia (Social Work Focus) with Drs. Meredith Harvey and Sara Johnson

SWK 4880 (4 cr)/SWK 5880 (3 cr): Cambodia: Past, Present, Future

Join us for a trip to Cambodia. There you will have the opportunity to learn about the country’s history, culture, and current social justice issues (human trafficking, immigration, poverty, etc.). During our visit, you will have a chance to experience the hectic modern capital of Phnom Penh, including the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and National Museum, and you will learn more about the tragic legacy of Cambodia’s Khmer Rouge as we tour the Killing Fields and Genocide Museum. In Siem Reap, you’ll learn about French colonial influence on Cambodia and discover the country’s ancient history during a visit to Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument in the world. In addition to visiting these historic and cultural sites, we will directly interact with representatives from local social institutions and organizations, including nursing and social work professionals, as well as people from non-governmental organizations that work the front lines to prevent human trafficking and other social injustices. To conclude this trip, we will spend two days on the beaches of Sihanoukville, where we’ll reflect on our experiences and discuss the lessons that we can take home with us.

Flight, transportation, lodging, museums and tours are included in the price, along with all breakfasts and four group dinners. Pre-trip course meeting dates for AU students will take place on AU's main campus on May 6 and 7, 2019.
