Work Recently Completed
Welcome Center work nears completion: In January, the final punch list and cleaning of the space was completed in the new Welcome Center and Schingoethe Museum. The next phase of furnishing the building has begun and will continue throughout the spring and summer. Once spring arrives, the landscaping will be complete and work will continue on the Grand Entrance.
Environmentally friendly fume hoods at STEM school: The STEM school was recently awarded a grant by the ComEd SmartIdeas program for their utilization of environmentally friendly fume hoods. While a traditional hood constantly exhausts interior air to the outside to prevent interior air contamination from compounds used in the labs, these Green fume hoods efficiently filter the air internally. One fume hood has the capacity to exhaust the amount of air equivalent to the entire building within 48 hours.
Normally heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems need to be designed to accommodate for significant heating and cooling loss, which would equate to larger and more expensive HVAC systems and higher utility costs. However, the fume hoods purchased through the grant, while almost twice the cost of a traditional hood, pay for themselves in a very short period of time due to their efficient design. The STEM Partnership School is equipped with 12 of these hoods.
