BSW Field Experience
Field work and internship experience enable you to apply the theory that you learn in our classes in real helping situations and to explore the fields of practice that are interesting to you. Most field work takes place during your senior year, and extends over three academic terms. You will complete 15 hours per week of field training, for a total of 450 hours over the academic year.
Field Work Placement Process
You will begin the process by discussing your field interests with the Director of Field Instruction during the winter term of your junior year. The director will help you select a field-placement site that is approved by the school, with a field instructor who holds an MSW degree and at least two years of post-MSW experience. Part-time students begin the field-placement process early in the spring semester during their junior year.
To arrange an appointment with the Director of Field Instruction, Alison Arendt, please call 630-844-5423.
Each year, in January, we invite social-work agency representatives to participate in a Field Fair held at the university. The Field Fair affords you the opportunity to meet informally with social workers in the field to discuss their agency and the types of field experiences available to students who are placed at their field site.
Interviewing at Field Sites
After meeting with the Director of Field Instruction to discuss possible field-placement sites, you will target one or more agencies for more extensive investigation. You may contact agencies on your own without first discussing the potential field site with the Director of Field Instruction. For more detailed information, please see the Field Manual.
Field Placement Instruction and Liaison
You will be supervised at your field placement by a field instructor. All field instructors are MSW-level supervisors with at least two years post-MSW experience and are approved by the School of Social Work.
In addition to being assigned a field instructor, you also will be assigned a field liaison who is responsible for consulting with the field instructor to help maximize your learning experience.
