*IMPORTANT CHANGES TO STUDENT HEALTH INSURANCE POLICY*
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) is a United States federal statute which was signed into law on March 23, 2010. Aurora University has been addressing the impact of this legislation over the past few years. Ultimately, it has affected our ability to provide affordable health insurance to our students. As a result, the university has decided to eliminate its policy requiring all full-time undergraduate students and all resident students to be covered by a health insurance plan. In addition, we will no longer be offering a student health insurance plan through the university.
The PPACA is aimed at increasing the rate of health insurance coverage for Americans and reducing the overall costs of health care. In order to meet the enhanced coverage required by PPACA, Aurora University explored a variety of options. The best rate we received for a policy with the required coverage enhancements reflected a rate increase of over 230%.
The decision to no longer offer a university student health insurance plan is based on the following factors:
- The significant increase in the cost of the plan to the student;
- the PPACA regulation requiring that all individuals be covered by an acceptable health insurance policy, effective January 1, 2014, making our requirement redundant and unnecessary;
- and the PPACA regulation requiring dependent coverage to be available until the adult child reaches the age of 26 (both married andunmarried children will qualify for this coverage).
For many of our students, this policy change simply means you will no longer have to complete the process to waive the student insurance policy. For others, it means that you will need to identify a new source of coverage. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and hope you will be able to secure coverage that meets your needs.
CURRENT POLICY EXPIRATION DATE:
Coverage for students who are currently enrolled in our student insurance plan will remain in place until the expiration of the current policy at 11:59pm on June 14, 2013. If you are currently enrolled in this plan, we urge you to begin exploring options for new coverage as soon as possible. SPECIAL NOTE TO STUDENT-ATHLETES:
In compliance with the NCAA, student-athletes must provide proof of primary Insurance that covers athletic injuries in order to be eligible to participate in intercollegiate athletics. Our athletic department is in the process of exploring any assistance that we may be able to provide in order to secure the necessary primary coverage, particularly for those students who are currently enrolled in the university's student health insurance plan. Please be aware that the Department of Athletics will be forwarding additional information regarding this in a separate mailing. It is imperative that you read that notice carefully in order to remain eligible to participate in intercollegiate sports for the 2013-2014 academic year. The Department of Athletics will continue to provide intercollegiate athletics participation insurance. This is excess coverage with a $250 "disappearing" deductable, and provides coverage for intercollegiate participation accidents after all primary and secondary (family, employer, etc.) insurance coverage(s) have been considered and paid. Insurance claims must be filed with the athletics department in Alumni Hall, attention Nicole Pieart.
