Below are the current Residence Life policies. These serve as supplemental policies to the Student Code of Conduct. Please note these are subject to change or modification. When changes are made, the University will provide notification to students.

Solicitation and Selling
Residents are permitted to store bicycles within their room. Any damage to the room caused by storage of a bicycle will be assessed to the resident. Bicycles cannot be mounted to the wall or ceiling. To ensure safety within the halls and to avoid damage to the carpet or hallway, bicycles are to be walked, not ridden, within the residence halls. Fire regulations prohibit storing bicycles in hallways, stairwells, or public areas.
Posters, pictures, and knick-knacks can make a resident feel more at home. Decorations are encouraged as long as they do not create health or fire hazards, or damage to the room. Use of temporary adhesive hooks is permitted, provided the student utilizes them properly, ensuring no paint is removed from the walls. The following items are prohibited in the residence halls:
a. Candles, even if unburned or wicks are removed.
b. Fabric, fabric-like, or plastic wall or ceiling coverings or adornments, including, but not limited to, tapestries, towels, or sheets.
c. Building or possessing lofts.
d. Making structural changes to a residence hall room.
g. Offensive or inappropriate materials clearly visible from a public view.
h. Fire safety regulations require that no more than 50% of your room door or walls be covered with material.
i. Halogen and neon lights, etc.
j. Live trees (such as Christmas trees) with lights.
j. Room walls, ceilings, floors, or furniture are not allowed to be painted.
a. Lights must be classified as indoor lights and be approved by UL's safety requirements (UL printed on the cord).
b. Lights must be plugged directly into a wall or surge protector.
c. No crimping of cords may occur; cords may not be run under doorways.
d. No more than three strings of lights may be connected together.
e. Lights cannot touch anything flammable and must be kept away from water sources.
f. Every room that wishes to display lights must have their lights checked and approved by the RA on their floor.
a. Hazardous electrical appliances include, but are not limited to: any appliance with an open heating element, space heaters, electric blankets, halogen lamps, cooking appliances, George Foreman grills, toasters and toaster ovens, and waterbeds. Coffee pots are acceptable, provided they are utilized properly.
b. Concealed extension cords and multiple outlet (octopus) adapters are prohibited. Multiple strip outlets, fused with at least a 14 gauge wire, grounded cord, are encouraged for powering electrical equipment.
c. Refrigerators 4.0 cubic feet or smaller and microwave ovens using no more than 700 watts are allowed. No other major electrical appliances, including air conditioners, are permitted.
Visitation within the residence halls is a privilege for students, not an inherent right. Securing the safety of our students is a major responsibility of Aurora University and the Office of Residence Life. Additionally, it is our responsibility to protect the right of privacy of students living in the residence halls. Guest privileges may be suspended should the environment of the residence hall be disrupted. The following points are considered provisions of the guest policy:
a. A "guest" is defined as any person staying overnight (opposite or same gender) who is not assigned by the Aurora University Office of Residence Life to live within that residence hall room, even if that person is an Aurora University student.
b. In cases where roommates do not agree regarding guests, the right of a resident to occupy his or her room without the presence of a guest shall take precedence over the privilege of a roommate to host a guest.
c. All guests to that residence hall room who will be present during quiet hours are required to be registered by midnight (see procedure, below).
1. At the time of registration, both the host and guest will be asked for specific identifying information on a guest registration form. Guests and their host will be required to provide appropriate picture identification (e.g. student ID, state ID, or driver's license).
2. All guests must be registered by midnight. Unregistered guests after this time will be asked to leave campus and the host and guests will face student conduct action, as appropriate.
3. Each guest will receive a pass that they must show upon request. Persons not complying will be asked to leave and the host and guests will face student conduct action. Unregistered guests who refuse to comply with the request to leave campus will be arrested for trespassing and the host will face student conduct action, as appropriate.
4. Hosts who fail to register their guests will face student conduct action, including possible suspension of visitation privileges.
5. Guest registration forms are completed with the Resident Assistant on duty.
d. Guests are the responsibility of their host and must be escorted in the halls and rooms at all times. It is the responsibility of the host to make sure their guest understands and abides by all University policies and procedures. If a resident's guest is involved in any policy violation, the host will be subject to student conduct action. Guests will be held accountable for their actions, as appropriate.
e. Guests who engage in behavior which violates AU policy will be escorted out of the residence halls; non-AU guests under the age of 18 will be escorted out of the residence halls and the parents/legal guardians may be contacted.
f. It is not always possible to predict behavior of persons who are friends. If a host contacts Residence Life staff, Campus Public Safety, or other administrators indicating that a guest is behaving inappropriately and asks for assistance, it may be interpreted that the host was acting responsibly, and disciplinary action for the host may not apply.
g. Residents are allowed to have two guests stay overnight on campus a maximum of three nights per seven day period, provided that all other residents assigned to that room are consulted and provide permission.
h. No guest is allowed to stay overnight in any residence hall room on campus, regardless of roommate permission, more than three nights per seven day period.
i. Residents under the age of 18 must have parental/legal guardian consent to have overnight guests by the signing of a consent form when the resident completes his or her housing registration.
j. Non-AU guests under the age of 18 are not permitted to stay overnight in the halls.
k. Babysitting is not allowed in AU residence halls at ANY time.
Public area furniture is provided for the use of all residents and may not be taken to student rooms. A charge may be assessed and/or student conduct action taken if public area furniture is found in student rooms.
Animals or pets are not permitted in the residence halls, except for approved certified service animals and/or fish/aquatic animals that must remain under water to survive, in aquariums 10 gallons or under. Animals or pets found in the residence halls must be removed within 24 hours.
In order to maintain an environment conducive to sleep and study, courtesy hours are in effect 24 hours a day. Any action that interferes with a student's right to study is a violation of this standard and may be subject to student conduct action. Please observe requests from your neighbor or roommate if they ask you not to disrupt their study time, regardless of the time of day; you should expect them to observe similar requests from you.
Quiet hours are in place to promote an environment for academic success. Stereos, video games, televisions, and voices should be kept at a level which confines noise within that room. If you wish to turn up the volume, you should use headphones; failure to do so could result in student conduct action. If you are unsure about what is an acceptable level of noise, please see your Resident Assistant.
Quiet hours are in effect Sunday-Thursday, 11 PM to 10 AM and Friday-Saturday, 1 AM to 10 AM. Beginning the Saturday prior to final exams and continuing until the halls close for the semester, quiet hours are in effect 24 hours a day.
You are responsible for the condition of your room and for all University furniture within your assigned space. Each student room is provided with one desk, chair, dresser, bed, and mattress. Some rooms also are provided with wardrobe units. All furniture assigned to your room must remain in your room. Students will be held responsible financially for any damage to University property and/or missing furniture. Water beds are prohibited in student rooms.
Signs, Pictures, and Posters
Illinois state law prohibits the removal of traffic and/or street signs. Therefore, traffic or street signs are not permitted in the residence halls. Pictures and other material that may be considered objectionable should not be displayed in areas that may be visible outside the student room. Signs are not allowed as window displays.
