Written in 1874, ”Die Fledermaus” (or The Flutter-Bat) quickly became the most beloved of all European operettas for its marvelous melodies, wonderful characters, and especially for its unforgettable waltzes! Sir Rudolf Bing, General Manager of The Metropolitan Opera House, brought the delightful work into the repertoire in a splendid new production during his tenure, and it remains a glamorous staple at the Met to this day. Other leading opera houses quickly followed suit, making “Die Fledermaus” the most popular operetta in the world.
