STAR Program
The STAR program (Strategies Targeted for Academic Rewards) is an intense five-day
summer orientation program which prepares students for the rigors of college
life. Students move on campus a week before classes begin and get the
low-down on what college life is all about. STAR students spend time
both in the classroom and around the campus learning the ins and outs of college
life. Below are just a few of the questions that the STAR summer program
addresses:
- How are high school and college expectations different?
- How do you read a syllabus?
- How do you deal with all that free time?
- How much do you need to study each week?
- How many hours should I work each week?
- What do I do if I'm trying my best but still struggling in a class?
- What do I do if I sleep through class?
- What if I get sick for a week?
- What do my professors expect from me?
- What services and resources are there on campus for me?
- How do I make full use of the computer and library resources on campus?
Once the semester begins, the Center for Teaching & Learning offers a variety of academic
assistance to STAR students: professional tutoring, peer tutoring, study groups,
study contracts, and informal advising. The Center for Teaching & Learning tracks the
academic progress of all STAR students during their freshman year by way of
midterm progress reports, e-mails, and phone calls to faculty and advisors.
How do I know if I'm in the program?
We'll tell you. If the admissions department admits you on
a conditional basis, you are automatically enrolled in the STAR program. We'll
send you a letter confirming this. If you do get this letter, keep
in mind that the program is not optional, it is a condition of your admittance. Also
note that you must pay a $135.00 fee which covers housing, meals, and program
materials. We will send you more details in August.
