Program Requirements — Bilingual-ESL Endorsement
Aurora University offers the opportunity for certified teachers to become endorsed/approved through its coursework for Bilingual/ESL Endorsement. Classes are taught by credentialed faculty with extensive experience in leading and teaching in a Bilingual/ESL program.The programs are offered in two delivery formats: individual course option and the cohort model. Courses are situated within a constructivist approach that promotes active participation in knowledge acquisition, knowledge restructuring, re-inventing knowledge, and experimenting with knowledge to make it meaningful, organized and permanent.
This program is open to students who hold a regular teaching certificate (Type 03, Type 04, Type 09, or Type 10). Applicants with a Type 29 Certificate are required to provide evidence of having passed the Basic Skills Test. After admission, the candidate must maintain a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Prior to admission to the College of Education, students seeking Bilingual/ESL Endorsement must meet the following requirements:
Complete set of official undergraduate and graduate college transcripts and/or original ECE or WES transcript evaluation in sealed envelopes. The transcript or evaluation must indicate a completed US bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) with a minimum 2.75 GPA.
One letter of recommendation.
Submit a completed graduate application and be accepted to Aurora University.

- EDU6110 Foundations of Bilingual Education (3)
- EDU6120 Methods and Materials for Teaching ESL (3)
- EDU6130 Cross Cultural Studies for Teaching ELLs (3)
- EDU6140 Assessment of Bilingual Students (3)
- EDU6170 Methods and Materials for Teaching ELLs (3)
- Elective from ESL Endorsement Courses (3)
For the Bilingual Endorsement, the Illinois State Board of Education requires a language proficiency test in a target language. The information for the language proficiency test can be obtained through the Illinois Certification Testing System.
The English As A Second Language Endorsement Course Requirements:

- EDU6130 Cross Cultural Studies for Teaching ELL (3)

The Bilingual/ESL Program at Aurora University is designed to complete the requirements for both endorsements with a total of 18 semester hours and 100 clinical hours embedded in the coursework.
